In the strangest of places ...

Yesterday I was talking with someone here who had lived in the U.S.

Me: "Where did you live?"

Him: "You probably haven't heard of it. Turlock, California."

Me: "Sure, I've heard of it."

Him: "Really? Most people never heard of it."

Truth be told, the only reason I've heard of Turlock is because Truckin' shot straight to the top of the charts in Turlock, California. According to Bob. I feel like I've heard him say that a bunch of times ...

But did I? I can't actually think of or find a Turlock reference other than E72. Clearly my knowledge of meaningless trivia and stage banter is not nearly trivial enough.

According to Wikipedia, Truckin was on the chart for eight weeks from Jan 27, 1971, when it debuted at number 64. Although we know that wasn't Turlock, because there, it shot straight to the top of the charts. In my mind, this is clearly the most famous thing about the town of Turlock. Yet shockingly, it is not on Turlock's Wikipedia entry. Such an oversight! (What, Turlock has something more important to share about itself?)

Did Bob really say that a lot, or is it just me?

11/20/71 is the earliest Turlock introduction to Truckin' I recall... At that point Garcia still thinks it's hilarious. It was mainly through '72 that Weir referred to Turlock before Truckin', lots of times, with variations.... Like on 12/12/72: "Hey listen, is there anybody here from Turlock tonight? When you're in love, the whole world is from Turlock, right?" The Dead had actually played in Turlock back in February '68...maybe they picked up a few fans... In the banter after Schoolgirl on 10/20/68, you can hear the band sounding very confused about where they are: Garcia: "We managed to get here to Fresno, or is it..." Lesh: "Wait a minute, I thought this was Turlock." Pigpen: "Right where the map said it was." I'd be surprised if Turlock even had its own music charts! One guy online says, "I ran into Bob Weir backstage at one of his solo club dates...and he told me how Truckin' had gone to number one at a radio station in Turlock." Maybe it just took 11 months for Weir to be informed of this... "They love us in Turlock and we love them for that."

Yes, he did. Off the top of my head, I'd say it's in 71-72.

I worked with a lady who was from and grew up in Turlock and she was also surprised I knew of it. I played her the E72 Truckin intor which she got a kick out of. I also knew of Turlock from American Graffitti which was supposed to be the Valley but was actually shot in Petaluma.

The other thing I know about from Turlock is way horrifying and grumesone, the one where that monster cut off that girls arms to dispose of prints and she SURVIVED! And he actually got out years later! Horrible story but was big news. When he got released he ended up in Florida where he killed his girlfriend

Ok, that's the extent of my Turlock knowledge

I wonder just how many quips there are. Remember the Berkeley ( I guess the one exception to the East Bay rule although the band didn't really play there that much )Community Theater 72 show where Bob announces he's running for mayor and Jerry snidely and slyly says... yeah of Fremont

Yes, but we need much finer distinctions of "E Bay"...I noticed that folks at Cal had real disdain for those born in the E Bay (Concord/WC/Diablo), and of course, Turlock, like Lodi, is the SJValley...

that's what I meant by beyond, Turlock is not the East Bay. I just mean being from Oakland you constantly hear it from SF Penninsula snobs snubbing their nose on us. Even though I always thought the joke was on them, we got better weather and view. I guess I kond of was a snob too in a way, I always thought anything on the other side of the hills through the tunnel or around ( Danville etc in addition to walnut Creek and Concord ) isn't really the Bay Area

I clearly remember driving deep into the east bay and at Concord they had a naval wepons depot that had bunkers and land for miles for munition storage. Also there was the ghost/mothballed fleet somwhere around there .Besides being heavily industrialized the east bay was freaking hot. I had the choice of living in the Sunset District or the Berkeley Hills and I took the city for purely job related reasons.

See? That's what I mean...but wait, you had disdain for SF as well?

har, har...

;)

Seriously, anyone from WC or Danville would tell you the joke was on ANYONE from Oak (bleech) or the City or much less, Marin...the East Bay (and not you, nor Flow; Fremont? Are you kidding? No one admits to being from Fremont; it's the Jersey of CA!), but the real East Bay, began on the E slope of the Berk Hills...Just goes to show, everyone can be a snob, eh?

Having lived in all of those places, it's either the real coast (HMBay or SCruz) or Diablo, for me, anyhoo!!!

The Pine Barrens for one...funny, but everyone I met in grad school from there all hated it, and I mean really hated it, but were all city folk.

I don't have disdain for SF. I love the city! I have disdain for SF snobs and Giants Fans, same thing : ) I was born in Oakland and have lived in Hayward AND yes Fremont but was too young to remember, when I moved back in High School and beyond I lived in Alameda. I like Alameda, tons of great Victorians and a nice view of the SF skyline right on the water. Of course also plenty of what les Claypool called Damn blue collar tweakers or whatever it was I forgot, but definitely true. I'd much rather live there than Concord, there's no water there! It is much warmer though. I'd love to live in Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay but there were never any jobs for me there plus expensive

Oh yeah, we really LOOKED down on Concord as well (WC area myself--born and raised, more or less; all the other spots were v short term). Plenty of probs with all the places, of course, and I am was just going on about how it's always possible to find folks that dislike one area for one reason or another.

For me it was all about open space, and you couldn't beat the EBay in the 60s and 70s for that...and warmer, as you note (others would of course, find fault with that)...I hated Seatle, and thus Portland, and therefore, SF, by extension, for the weather alone (too gray, too cold, too consistent, ya know?), but that's cause I am a warm weather sort...

Just shocked me as a kid to find so many folks at Cal looked down their noses at ANY one from the EBay, ya know? Meaning, the birth place of free speech and all, and here I was finding the kids there were snobs of the first order.

Ironic, I thought...

The bad thing is that with the cost of housing and the increase in upscale housing it brings in more and more snobs everyday. I have seen a definite change for the negative in that regard during my decade+ living here.

That and I'm getting tired of always being cold. The cold is only going to get worse since all the climate change models show this burg getting colder and not warmer.

But it's one difficult place to leave. As evidence, all I have to see are my occasional bloody fingernails from holding-on. Though it's one of the few places that I've lived where I'm always happy to return from either vacations or biz trips.

I'm with you on Santa Cruz or Half Moon Bay. Plus, I always have Moss Beach or Princeton on my mind. Those towns seem so peaceful, with all that you hear are the crashing of the waves.

When I was with Sun in Palo Alto, I was looking at moving to Santa Cruz but just saw a good part of my life being spent on 85.

btw: GO A's!!! I'm trying to put my feelings for wolfe aside and enjoy the season. Between the A's and the season that my hometown Pirates are having it's one of the best seasons in sometime. Ok, the Gigantes in 2010 was pretty special as well.

Whoops--meant to say that Alameda is nice; sister lived there for a few yrs in the 70s, and I worked there at naval shipyard, etc; liked it myself...but needed warmer weather and more open spaces, IMHO.

Hey Johnny you have to be excited about your A's. Fun to watch this year. I just hope their owner doesn't break them up over the winter. If kept together I think they might have a chance at another ring.

Big time excited! Thanks for asking. Its been a real nailbiter waiting to see day by day if they can keep it going. The fact that they took the series over the Angels was a great sign. Everything ive been reading suggests they arent mortgaging the team for immediate gain. We'll see. As usual im being a typical overly optimistic fan. My Dad taking me to many many A's games will always be some of my best memories. My only fear is either of my teams moving. Big time Oakland fan its in my blood. Im trying not to talk about it with my buddy Highflow who is superstitious and a bigger A's fan than me. Who's your team? Im not knowledgeable enough to ever join in the fantasy stuff

I moved several times as a kid and have lived in Santa Cruz since 1996. I like sports and baseball as a whole but if I were to pick a Bay Area team it would definitely be the A's. The homerism of the Giants fans and radio station KNBR get nauseating after a while. I work in San Jose and have often thought that if they move to the South Bay I will buy season tickets.

doesn't sound like the San Jose thing is a go. I absolutely dread the thought of either of my teams moving but I'd rather they at least stay in the Bay Area rather than the alternative. Still nailbiting! It's one big rollar coaster, damn I wish they'd pull ahead to get a comfortable lead for the wild card

Oakland: NY Times #5 place in the world to visit, 2012. Ok, so some qualifiers were left off, but the banner still looks great on City Hall across from the Occupy Oakland homestead. Check it.
